This module will look at the following topics:

  • Situating Ourselves

This will begin with a discussion of the historical context of colonial education systems, and reflect on the justified distrust that continues to exist towards research and academia from Indigenous communities. It will then discuss ways in which educators and researchers can be an active participant in the creation of a culturally safe environment.

  • Guiding Ethical Documents

This section of this module will focus on how we move forward through the practice of building respectful, responsible, reciprocal and relevant relationships that put Indigenous communities needs first in research. Multiple documents will be available to look through to gain a better understanding of the ethical obligations researchers have to Indigenous communities prior to working with them, while working alongside them, and when the data has been collected.
